The $500 will fund the clean up and window installation in our first identified possibility potluck location. All additional funds will be used to publicize the event and supplement key dinner supplies that aren't donated. We already have key partners engaged and potential dates in mind, it is now a matter of making it manifest. The Awesome Foundation funded the first projects of The Awesome League of Possibilities (www.awesomeleague.org) which included installations in a cafe, neighborhood coffee hours, and a small business valentine project. We hope the GOOD community can make it even more AWESOME.

Wind Turbine for the Recyclers' Farm & Garden

The group will install a 450 Watt 12 Volt Wind Turbine with a Brushless Alternator and 360 degree free rotation on the mounting pole. The "Post Adapter" that secures the turbine to the pole carries the slip ring and brush gear enabling the turbine to rotate. We have chosen a fairly simple wind turbine so that we can examine all the pieces and after understanding the mechanisms behind the turbine, we can build up other wind towers using recycling materials. An example would be to use old electrifan blades as blades for the turbine. In the process, high school students from our neighbor school and other people in the community can learn the skills and the value of using wind (so abundant in this area!) as a of clean and renewable energy.

NYC's public schools throw “away” 850,000 styrofoam trays per day (except for Tuesdays) . CafCu) is leading an Alternative Messaging Campaign to publicize the shocking statistics of NYC school cafeteria generated garbage and to create innovative ways of engaging and inspiring the public school community to take action to reduce their cafeteria trash. By FLIP-TAP-STACK-ing all NYC lunch trays, public school students can divert 1 million plastic garbage bags from going to landfills each year and save NYC more than $300,000 per year! Funding will support the creation of the animation and flip books in order for us to pilot this engaging way of communicating change of habit in several NYC schools.

This summer our partnership will transform a plot of land at Brooklyn’s Red Hook Houses into a model urban farm. Green City Force’s role: engage 10 local young adults, public housing residents aged 18-24, to serve and train as part of an Urban Farm Corps. Starting this summer, Corps Members will spend 4 days/week on the farm and one day in the classroom, building work experience and college readiness. $500 will directly support training costs and will raise visibility for this new initiative. Hundreds of families will pass by the farm each day, and meet a team of young residents helping to grow local, organic food while building sustainable futures for themselves and their community.

The $500 would provide money for marketing this event. It would provide for tshirts the day of and signs to be hung on the fences. I believe the only way we can be successful in the long run is by getting community buy-in. My instinct is that humor is the way to go.

Freshen Our Communities with Farmers Markets for Everyone
Voting time hasn't begun.

Farmers Markets are weekly venues for community building and social interaction. They are places where local fresh fruits and vegetables are purchased and relationships grow. However, low-income groups are often excluded from the health and social benefits of markets. Wholesome Wave doubles EBT (aka food stamps) when used at farmers markets to benefit our local famers and make fresh produce available to low-income families. I propose increasing participation and engagement at markets with tastings, cooking demos, and craft projects to foster our sense of community with the beauty of our neighbors. This would include a tasting table at an event for low-income seniors at an urban community garden.

The funds will go towards buying materials such as wood, nails, bailing wire, any additional tools that we don't already have. It will also fund promotional materials such as fliers that we will use to promote the project and some community work parties where we will invite the community to participate in the building of the birdhouses. The funds would also go towards providing food and refreshments for attendees who participate in the community work parties. And of course, we need to buy bird-seed to scatter around each birdhouse when they are mounted, as an official "open for business" welcoming gesture.

We will focus on several key entry points to the Peoplestown community. Volunteers will remove litter and large dumped waste, will prune back overgrown street trees and vegetation in vacant or abandoned lots. This project will enhance the key entry points to the neighborhood, creating a greater sense of pride and dignity in Peoplestown for residents and those who travel through our community for work or nearby sporting and leisure events. We will need rakes, shovels, bags, water & food for volunteers as well as herbicides for significantly overgrown lots. We are members of the Atlanta ToolBank (http://atlanta.toolbank.org) so we can borrow all the tools we need. This grant will fund supplies and the ToolBank's low handling fee.

We are paying for all our own expenses and we already raised money for native plants to plant. We also found a cool group to supply trash bags and gloves for our cleanups. We also found local food folks to supply food--people like to eat! During the events and along the way we want to share our story and give kids and families a reward for participating. We want to give all kids we meet a bookmark on seed paper and a mini-kite. The kite they can fly at their local lake or beach that they helped clean up. The bookmark has fun information for them and can be planted in their garden at home for local wildflowers. We want to do 2000 bookmarks and 2000 minikites. That way we can be sure we reach at least 2000 kids!

Every year, MEVO pursues a year long project. In 2011, MEVO created and distributed 200 recycling bins created from old shipping containers, and donated them to various schools, after providing every student with a comprehensive education about proper means of recycling. This year, we are connecting ourselves and our volunteers with the earth by performing native plant species rehabilitation on unused hiking trails. These plants will return retired, eroded trails with new life. That said, each native sapling that we plant costs money, and we need a constant source of funding to allow this project to exist. We benefit both the natural environment and the volunteers who get to give a new beginning to an otherwise disregarded natural entity.

The $500 would allow us to do a big community-wide cleanup. Also, it would enable us to give scholarships to local artists to paint murals above the very walls where this trash pile up is to provide some ongoing positivity in this blighted area. We believe by placing art (trees, flowers, etc) and words of inspiration (poems) above this location will serve as positive images to counteract all the negative images that are present. We would also work with agencies to find these displaced people housing.

I try to bring my bags with me to the store, but often I forget. If on the day that I did remember and I was given a rose for it, I would be more likely to remember in the future as I would associate grocery shopping and my bags with something beautiful and fun. I would also talk about it to all of my friends--which would promote other people to bring their bags. I want to brighten people's day and promote the campaign in a positive and beautiful way. The $500 would go towards purchasing the roses or another type of flower which would be handed out during a busy time at several different stores on different days so no one expects it. Positive reinforcement goes a long way!

A financial donation will help us to make the Spring Columbia Cleanup an annual event for our club, students at the elementary school, and other community members. The money will allow the Riverside Outdoor Club to purchase trash bags, gloves, sanitizer, transportation and community communications and advertising. River cleanups are not expensive to organize and run, so $500 will ensure that this event will be repeated for years to come.
