Overview of Idea

"Put a bird...house on it!" To bring elements of nature to the city and provide the fresh, clean feeling of being in the outdoors with the birds and the breeze. We will build "green"-roof birdhouses that will be placed at businesses and homes throughout the city as icons of support for urban nature.

idea specifics: what will the $500 fund?

The funds will go towards buying materials such as wood, nails, bailing wire, any additional tools that we don’t already have. It will also fund promotional materials such as fliers that we will use to promote the project and some community work parties where we will invite the community to participate in the building of the birdhouses. The funds would also go towards providing food and refreshments for attendees who participate in the community work parties. And of course, we need to buy bird-seed to scatter around each birdhouse when they are mounted, as an official “open for business” welcoming gesture.

If you do this, I think it would be nice to not use lawn grass on top, but to use native flowers or grasses instead

That is a great idea for our next generation of birdhouses. Currently the "grass" that you see on the roof is recycled scraps of "astro-turf" provided by a local installer. We are looking into using succulents and drought tolerant plants to eventually replace the "fake-grass." Thanks for the feedback!

Great idea! How long will the birdhouses last with the integrated planters?

The birdhouses are made using recycled wood from shipping pallets and the grass is scrap pieces that are donated from a local "astro-turf" installer. The birdhouses should last quite a few years (at least 3-5 years), however they should be cleaned each year so that another set of birds can move in ;)
